First off, now that I have this set up, I’m gonna kinda try to use it as a blog/journal thing and write down what I’m up to, at least on the music side of things, as that is the predominant part of my life.
So, I’ve been writing… A LOT! I did FAWM this year (February Album Writing Month, a yearly online challenge where you try to write 14 songs in 28 days… the idea is “Finished, not perfect.”
My record before this was 4.
This year, I got in a groove and just one-take recorded the songs, mistakes and all and put them up on the FAWM site.
The freedom that doing that gave me, pushed me to do more.
To write more.
So I did.
I got 9 done in the month! That’s not bad at all!
That’s an album. A short one, but it’s an album!
The other thing it taught me is the old lesson of “K!ll your darlings”.
Some of them won’t get any more work done on them.
Some of them are reworks of other themes and might get folded into other songs.
Some of them will be ripped up and thrown away altogether.
And that’s fine. They can’t all be perfect.
But they got finished. And that’s important.
So… fingers crossed. I THINK I have enough for a few albums.
Also, I sat down and actually did the work of recording demos to get to the band, so they can add their magic and make my “pretty good, I’m not mad at them” into something special.
Someone wise said… well, I just looked for the source and a LOT of people said this… “Always work with people that are better than you…”
I’m so, so lucky that I get to work with three musicians that are SOOOOO much better than I am!
